Source:  True Value Paint

Materials:

  • True Value E-Z Kare flat finish
          paint, color of your choice
          (for base coat)

  • True Value E-Z Kare eggshell
finish paint, color of your choice
          (up to 3 colors)

  •  Paint roller & tray

  • Mixing container

  • Ultimate Finish paint brushes

  • 2 large rectangular sponges

  • Pencil

  • Level

  • Dropcloth

Directions:

Step 1: Paint Surface with Base Coat “Mortar"

After properly cleaning and preparing the surface, apply a base coat of True Value E-Z Kare flat finish paint in a color of your choice. Allow the area to dry completely. This will become your "mortar" color.

Step 2: Measure the Paint for the “Bricks"

Measure about 1/2-cup of the True Value E-Z Kare eggshell finish paint in colors of your choice in separate mixing containers.

Step 3: Prepare to Paint

Draw a light horizontal pencil line on the surface so the bricks will appear straight. Using a level helps achieve a straighter horizontal effect if your walls are not perfectly plumb.

Step 4: Practice Before Painting

Dampen the sponge in water and wring out well. Dip the small block end of the sponge into the paint and blot off the excess onto paper towels until almost dry. Practice your spacing technique on cardboard to perfect a brick layering look.

Step 5: Sponge Paint the Bricks

Using the same technique you perfected in Step 4, apply the sponge to the surface creating a brick effect. Offset each row like a real brick wall. Alternate between paint colors for variation in brick color every other row. Clean the sponge from time to time for easier and neater application.

Create Other Looks with the Bricks Technique:
If you want to simulate the look of limestone, simply eliminate the "mortar." Mark off random blocks on wall using painter's tape, then follow Steps 4 and 5. Handpaint or use stencils to create vines or flowers growing on the bricks. Cut one of the sponges in half so you can vary the sizes of the bricks. Use a piece of torn cardboard to create a "chip off" if you want to achieve the look of aged brick.
