Easy Updates for Lamps: Details Make a Difference
Lighting is one of the most overlooked elements in home decorating, but it need not be regarded as utilitarian. Any lamp in your home can be updated, upgraded and customized to add style to your rooms. Here are some easy ideas for updating your lamps and lampshades!
Is your lamp one of those bright brass tone discount store specials? Easily update these type of lamps with a can of "hammered metal" spray paints available in any paint section. Follow the directions for prep on the can, and make sure to use masking tape to protect the cord, switch and interior of the lamp. ALWAYS make sure any lamp you are crafting on is unplugged.
Older ceramic base lamps that have lost their luster can be decoupaged with white glue and pretty torn tissue paper or handmade papers. Glass lamps can be painted with craft glass paints, or frosted with glass frost spray.

Fall Decorating Ideas
Summer's big color gets bright and intense in fall. The hot chartreuse of Granny Smith apples declares the effect. Nest a stocky candle in the middle of a glass salad or punch bowl filled with green apples. No need to use a tall candle; simply elevate a short one with a candlestand or aluminum can. Then hide the stand with apples.
Fall branches make wonderful -- and cheap -- decorations for your home. Look for interesting shapes with leaves, acorns, or berries.
One item, repeated, creates an elegant wreath for a door or tabletop. Mini pumpkins, gourds, or other fruits will all make suitably seasonal decorations for fall. Our pumpkin wreath features a black satin ribbon for Halloween that can be switched in November for a casual bow of raffia.
Swirl a bittersweet vine around a fat pumpkin for an instant centerpiece. (Place the pumpkin on a platter so moisture won't ruin a tabletop.) Star anise and dried fruit slices decorate our table, but pinecones, moss, and natural elements are also appropriate.

Make Your Own Fall Scented Potpourri Balls
Courtesy of: BHG.com
Materials:
- 3 or 4 inch plastic foam craft spheres
- Hot-glue gun and hot-glue sticks
- Dried potpourri mix or other dried materials such as bay leaves, preserved fall leaves, dried fruit rinds, miniature pinecones, dried berries, and so on.
1. Start with 3- or 4-inch plastic foam craft spheres. Use hot glue to attach the potpourri elements all around the balls. Overlap the decorative pieces to completely cover the foam.
2. Display the balls in individual glass vases, on decorative plates, or together in a larger bowl.
3. If desired, refresh scents from time to time using drops of aromatic oils. Tiny bottles of various fragrances are readily available from craft stores.

Bring Fall Indoors With the Colors That Reflect the Season
Courtesy of: ARA Content
The scent of cinnamon-infused cider fills the air, crisp leaves crackle underfoot and you're able to enjoy long walks in the cooler evening as summer eases into fall. As you settle into the season -- perhaps by supplementing your fall-weather wardrobe with a toasty sweater or two in rich shades -- consider giving your home a little seasonal lift as well. Updating your rooms with color is a quick and easy way to embrace this time of year, and will put you in the mood to enjoy all the bounties these autumn months offer!
Begin your project by taking a look at what surrounds you. Note the colors you see in everything from the fashions at your favorite shop to the cars whizzing past you on the street. Which colors appeal to you? Which make you feel calm? Which energize you? Which give you a cozy feeling that's just right for fall? Let the wheels start turning and see which shades your inner designer is drawn to . . . there's no right or wrong answer.
"Color is always evolving," says Becky Ralich Spak, senior designer for Sherwin-Williams. "Color knows no bounds -- it is fluid, not static; it intermingles in unexpected combinations; and it explores many paths to achieve its goal."
Following your instincts is the best way to approach your color update, experts agree, because there is no one single color hue or palette that will dominate this fall, or even in the coming year.
