Materials:

  • 2 round unfinished wooden shelves

  • 2 unfinished wooden letters

  • 1/4" wide painter's tape

  • 1/4" wide flat paintbrush

  • 1" foam brush

  • Acrylic paints: Green, yellow, blue, purple, red, orange

  •  Satin finish spray varnish

  • Base coat or wood primer (if desired)

  • Medium weight sand paper

  • Tack cloth

  • Wood glue or glue gun and glue sticks

Directions:

1.  Sand the wooden pieces. Wipe clean with tack cloth.

2.  Paint all pieces with base or primer coat. Let dry completely. Lightly sand a second time. Wipe clean with tack cloth.

3.  With acrylic paint color of choice, paint entire surface of wooden pieces. Let dry completely.

4.  Beginning at shelf center, use tape to create stripes about 1/4" apart. Shelves will be turned upside down to create the base of the bookends.

5.  Paint stripes with 1/4" flat brush beginning at center of shelf and working out. Change colors as desired.

6.  Using opposite end of brush, dip into paint and dot on letters. Reload tip with paint after each dot. Let dry.

7.  With wood glue or hot glue, attach a letter to each shelf, making sure they are placed in the right direction.

8.  In a well-ventilated area, spray varnish all wood.
