Sail Cloth:  plain weave fabric where the majority of the fabric face is composed of warp threads  
     
Satin Weave:  a majority of warp threads are interlaced with filling threads to create a smooth appearance on fabric  
     
Scale: the relationship of the size of a drawing to the size of the actual object  
     
Sconce: a wall-mounted light fixture or decorative drapery holder  
     
Secondary Color: a color created by mixing two primary colors  
     
Sectional Furniture: modular furniture that can be used separately or together to create different looks  
     
Semi-gloss: half glossy, half flat  
     
Shag:  cut or loop carpet with a random appearance  
     
Sham:  decorative covering for bed pillows  
     
Sheers:  window treatment constructed with translucent fabrics and materials  
     
Shrinkage:  loss due to contractions due to washing, boiling or other processes  
     
Sidelight:  typically stationary vertical windows flanking an operating exterior door  
     
Silk: a natural fiber reeled from the cocoon of a silk worm  
     
Sisal:  strong fiber from sisal leaves used to create floor coverings  
     
Slipcover: a fabric cover for a couch or chair  
     
Softwood: flooring made from easy-to-saw conifer or evergreens, such as pine, spruce, or fir  
     
Spattering: a paint finish created by spraying or flicking drops of paint  
     
Spring Tension Rod:  adjustable drapery rods housing a spring to compress tightly into a window frame or opening  
     
Square Feet:  width x length, also referred to as area (3 ft x 3 ft = 9 sq. ft)  
     
Stack Back:  amount of space needed on either side of an operating window treatment for fabric panels, when fully opened  
     
Swag: fabric or garlands in curving between two points used in drapery treatments or as an applied decoration  
     
Symmetrical: completely balanced
