Mural and Wall Art Option for Children's Rooms
by:  Fiona Paterson

Dizzy with décor ideas for your child’s room? Have you considered a mural as a focal point?  Hand painted murals is the first thing that comes to mind, but the there is other alternatives. Let’s take a look at what is available and what it might cost.

Hand painted murals:

A mural could cover a whole room or a just a small image above the bed. The cost will depend on the artist, the size and detail of the mural. Artists often quote by the square foot and sometimes by the square inch. Wallpaper murals are also quoted in this way. (1 square foot = 144 square inches)

For an experienced artist, expect to pay approximately $60-$120 a square foot. A less experience artist may start in the region of $30 a square foot. You may also have to pay travel expenses in the region of $100 - $150 per day for an artist living outside your area. It is acceptable to ask the artist to design the mural to fit your budget.

Murals on canvas:

These are applied to a wall much like wallpaper. They are painted off site thus reducing the inconvenience of having work done in your home. Costs are likely to be a similar price to a wall mural, but while you may save on travel expenses, you may have the cost of installing the mural by a competent decorator if this has not been included in the quote from the artist.

Wall paper murals:

Images are printed onto high quality paper and installed just like normal wallpaper. Generally suppliers will have an extensive gallery selection of murals as well as the facility to reproduce your images or photographs into a custom mural. Expect to pay $8 for a gallery mural and $9 to $10 a square foot for a custom order.

Do it yourself murals:

There are a variety of resources available to you. Inspirational books, ‘paint by number mural kits’ and stencils. Children’s décor sites often have ideas and guidelines on how to go about painting your own child’s mural.
Paint by numbers $10-$50 depending on the size.
Cloud color wash kits $50
Projection art books $16-$20
Stencils books $2 and $10
Stencil library stencils $5 for a simple silhouette stencil, $20 for a slightly more complicated 3-colour shape to $300 for a large detailed mural stencil.

Wall stickers:

Stickers give you the flexibility to position and reposition them where and how you want to. There is a fantastic selection readily available, in every theme conceivable. Most kid’s décor sites will have a wall sticker section. Prices go from $10 for wet and stick wallpaper cutouts (Wallies) and $20 for a large cut out mural.  $10 for a small selection or single sticker. $20 for a sheet of stickers.   Large cut out mural stickers can go up to $50 depending on the make and supplier.

Wall art and framed pictures:

This includes anything that could be hung as a wall feature.

Original art and wall sculptures can be bought or commissioned. Prices will vary enormously depending on the artist.

Posters and framed pictures, $2.00 to $25.00 a square foot. Your choice of frame is going to affect the overall cost.

Rugs can be also be hung on a wall. You can find beautiful designs that would make a stunning focal point in the price range of $80-$200 for a 3’x4’ rug.

Hand painted wall hangings cost in the region of $100 -$500 and more depending on the artist. There is often the option to personalize them with your child’s name.

Giclee prints look like originals paintings but will be less expensive, are available as wall hangings and canvas pictures.

Tapestries for a more ‘grown up’ look, range from $50 to $250 and higher depending on the size and manufacturer.

Find a supplier:

When searching the Internet it will help if use a room theme with your mural option.

For example  "Murals for kid’s rooms" fairies  or "wall paper murals" cowboy.

Decor sites often have selections of children’s art, so also search on "Kid’s décor’ and "kid’s room décor".
