Does Your Favorite Room Blend Contrasting Textures For a Unique Look?
by:  Garth Epp

It is the goal of most people to create a feel and ambiance within their home that reflects who they are and that is warm and inviting to guest and visitors.  In the process of creating a décor that is warm, and inviting yet reflective of their personality can be difficult at times.

When most people think about recreating or changing the décor of a room people often overlook how they can create the feel they desire by changing the textures within the room.  The term texture is often misunderstood and even seems rather scary to many.  The simple truth is, everything has texture.  When one refers to texture within the décor of a room all that is suggested is that it is important to appeal to ones sense of sight and touch and use the texture of items to bring a room dimension and depth.

Textures can compliment and contrast each other.  I like to use the example of indoor wall mounted fountains.  Take for example a slate wall fountain with a copper finished frame.  These elegant features have a very classy and bold presence in a room and some of this is attributed to the fact that they incorporate and blend several different textures together.  The roughness of the hand cut slate panel gives a very rough texture in contrast to the smooth polished finish of the copper hood and basin of the unit.  With these 2 contrasts the ever-changing surface of water that flows down the slate adds an entirely new texture.  A feature such as mentioned above can use several different textures that compliment each other to create a unique feature or focal point within a room.

Textures are not necessarily physically felt in order to allow the visitor to engage with the textures of the materials.  The rough unfinished bricks of a fireplace add texture to the room without the need for anyone to actually feel the roughness of the re-used bricks.  A fireplace with smooth river stones adds a different texture despite the fact that the shape and size of the fireplace may be exactly the same.

Explore with different types of textures as you decorate your favorite room.  Add a variety of textures in combination with each other.  While you experiment with different combinations it is also important to consider the color combinations and how you can use color to extenuate and blend these varieties of textures to create the look and feel you wish the room to possess.

Let’s explore some unique textures that can be used in combination to contrast each other.

- The smoothness of a polished wood floor can contrast a fluffy bear rug.

- A fuzzy throw blanket over the arm of a smooth arm on a leather arm chair is another natural contrast.

- A smooth mirror hanging along side a hanging tapestry.

- An assortment of sea shells in a smooth glass bowl of sand.

- Fresh cut flowers in a ceramic vase.

- A wood bowl of assorted fruit sitting on a fabric table runner.

- A tabletop water fountain smooth glass basin with smooth river stones and a dried bamboo spout.

Ultimately, your imagination is the limit.  But if you purposefully try to incorporate a variety of textures into the décor of your home you will create a very unique feel that will stand out and engage those within the room.
